Whenis it an emergency?
Not every dental complaint has to be treated today. These do.
- Persistent, throbbing toothache that does not respond to a painkiller
- A broken or knocked-out tooth, for example after a fall or a sports injury
- A swollen cheek or swelling in the face or neck
- Fever combined with tooth pain
- A crown, bridge or filling that has come loose and stops you eating
- Bleeding that will not stop after a tooth or molar has been extracted
- A brace or wire poking into your cheek and causing sores
Swelling combined with fever or difficulty swallowing is always urgent. Do not wait for the next day with that.
Whatcan you do until we can see you?
Every minute countsWith a knocked-out tooth
Pick the tooth up by the crown, the white part, and do not touch the root. Rinse it briefly and put it straight back in the socket if you can. If that does not work, keep it in a cup of milk or inside your cheek, and call us immediately. Replaced within the hour has the best chance.
With toothache
Take a painkiller according to the leaflet. Paracetamol is usually the first choice. Do not put aspirin or clove oil directly on the gum, that only causes irritation. Sleep with your head slightly raised, which reduces the pressure and with it the pain.
With a broken tooth
Keep the broken piece. Rinse it carefully with water, but do not scrub it. We can often bond it back or use it as a reference for the repair.
With a loose crown or filling
Keep the piece and chew on the other side. Do not try to glue a crown back yourself with household glue. That makes a proper repair harder later.
With bleeding after an extraction
Bite firmly on a clean gauze or a rolled-up handkerchief for twenty minutes. Do not keep checking whether it has stopped, because then it starts again. If the bleeding continues, call us.

You do not have to be registered with us to call with an acute complaint. Many people with an emergency have no regular dentist at that moment, or their own practice cannot see them quickly enough. If we cannot fit you in, we refer you on rather than leaving you with the problem.

1. You call

2. We assess it
Together we work out how urgent it is. Sometimes it can safely wait, sometimes it cannot.
3. You get a time
We try to see you as soon as possible, preferably the same day.
4. We treat
First the complaint and the pain, then we take a calm look at the rest.
At an emergency appointment we mainly solve the acute problem. A definitive solution, a crown or a root canal treatment for example, is scheduled afterwards without rush.
Whatdoes emergency treatment cost?
Dental fees in the Netherlands are set by law by the Dutch Healthcare Authority, the NZa. An emergency consultation therefore costs the same here as at any other practice. You pay no surcharge because it is an emergency.
What you end up paying depends on the treatment that is needed. We always tell you in advance what we are going to do and roughly what it costs, so there are no surprises. If you have supplementary dental insurance, part of it is often reimbursed.
Good to know if you are new to the Dutch system: dental care for adults is not covered by the basic health insurance, so an emergency visit is usually paid by you or by your supplementary policy.

Can I walk in without an appointment in an emergency?
Always call first. Then we know you are coming and you do not have to wait for a gap in the diary that may not be there.
How quickly can I be seen with acute toothache?
If you call on a working day within our opening hours, we try to see you as soon as possible, preferably the same day.
My child has broken a tooth, what now?
Keep the piece, call us and keep your child calm. With a knocked-out permanent tooth every minute counts. With a baby tooth you do not put the tooth back, but do call so we can take a look.
I have a swollen cheek, can that wait?
No. Swelling points to an infection that is spreading. Call the same day, certainly with a fever.
Is a painkiller enough?
A painkiller dulls the pain but does not remove the cause. If you need one several days in a row, something is going on that needs treating.
Do you speak English at the practice?
Yes. Many of our patients moved to Eindhoven for work or study. The phone call, the treatment and the paperwork can all be handled in English.
