You are in the chair and you hear a number you were not expecting. Or a treatment plan far more drastic than you thought. Six crowns, a root canal, perhaps even implants. You nod, you book a follow-up, and only once you are home does it start to nag.
Is all of this really necessary?
Asking that question is not distrust. It is sensible. And you are not alone in asking it. This article covers when a second opinion is worth it, how it works in the Netherlands, what it costs, and why it does not have to offend your current dentist.
What is a second opinion, exactly?
A second opinion is an assessment by a second dentist of a diagnosis or treatment plan you have already been given. That dentist looks at your teeth, at the X-rays and at the proposed plan with fresh eyes, and gives their own judgement.
One thing to know: a second opinion is not a treatment. The dentist giving it does not, as a rule, take over the work. The point is that you can make a decision with more confidence. What you do next is up to you.
There are three possible outcomes:
- The plan is sound. You go back to your own dentist with peace of mind.
- There is another route. A less invasive or less expensive option exists.
- The plan falls short. Something has been missed.
In practice the first outcome is the most common. And that is exactly the value: you are buying certainty.
When is a second opinion a good idea?
Not for every filling. But in these situations, yes:
With a large or expensive treatment plan. Several crowns, implants or a full mouth rehabilitation quickly runs into thousands of euros. For a home renovation of that size you would also ask for a second quote.
When something feels off. You know your own mouth best. If something does not sit right, that is a valid reason.
When healthy teeth would be ground down. Crowns and some veneers remove tooth tissue that never grows back. That is irreversible, and worth thinking about carefully.
When extraction is advised. A tooth that has been pulled does not come back. Sometimes a root canal can still save it.
With ongoing complaints and no explanation. If pain persists while nothing shows up, a second pair of eyes can help.
When you feel rushed. Haste does not belong in a good treatment plan, except in a genuine emergency. A good dentist gives you time to think.
Your rights as a patient in the Netherlands
This is the part that holds most people back, and it is worth being clear about, especially if you moved here recently.
You are always allowed to ask for a second opinion. It is a normal part of Dutch healthcare. You do not need permission and you do not have to justify it.
You have the right to your own file. That includes your X-rays and your treatment plan. You can request them, and practices are obliged to provide them.
You do not have to switch dentists. Many people get a second opinion and then have the work done by their original dentist, simply with more confidence.
Most dentists respond to this perfectly well. Anyone confident in their plan has nothing to hide. If your dentist reacts with irritation or evasion, that in itself tells you something.
How it works in practice
Step 1: request your records. Call or email your current dentist and ask for your X-rays and treatment plan. You have the right to see your file, and images are usually sent digitally. This saves time and avoids unnecessary new X-rays.
Step 2: book a second opinion appointment. Say clearly when booking that it is a second opinion, so enough time is set aside. A proper second opinion consultation takes longer than a regular check-up.
Step 3: the consultation. The dentist examines your teeth, studies the images and the existing plan, and talks you through what they see. Bring your questions, and write them down beforehand. In the chair you always forget half of them.
Step 4: you decide. You get an assessment and, where relevant, an alternative plan. What you do with it is entirely up to you.
What does a second opinion cost?
Dental fees in the Netherlands are set by law by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa). A second opinion is billed as a consultation, plus any procedures needed, such as an X-ray if the existing images are too old or unusable.
Expect the cost of an extended consultation. That is a fraction of a treatment plan running into several thousand euros, so it is rarely a reason not to do it.
Whether it is reimbursed depends on your supplementary insurance. Dental care for adults is not part of the Dutch basic health insurance. Check your policy, or ask your insurer.
